San Simeon's Neptune Pool

San Simeon's outdoor Neptune Pool, flanked by colonnades and a Greek Temple facade, is perhaps the most superb of the many outdoor pools designed by architect Julia Morgan during her long career.  The Neptune Pool took twelve years to perfect, beginning in 1924.  It holds 345,000 gallons of water.  The basin of the pool is white marble, refraction of light makes the water appear blue.

San Simeon's Roman Pool

W.R. Hearst's desire for a "winter pool" resulted in Morgan's design for a "Roman Plunge."  Every surface of the indoor swimming pool, below - including basin, walls, and ceiling - is covered in mosaics of hammered gold and delicate Venetian glass tiles.
